Portrait Series — Atelier
A study of the people who make things by hand.
An image begins
with attention.
For a small ceramic practice in East London, the most important gestures were the ones between the finished pieces. The pause before placing a vessel on the shelf; the way dust gathers on a hand; a room holding the day’s changing light.
We spent two afternoons watching and very little time directing. These photographs are a portrait of a practice, not a collection of objects.

Notes from
the shoot.
We arrived with one camera and a small reflector. The studio already had everything else: low winter sun, chalky surfaces, and an easy rhythm of work.
The most useful direction was no direction at all. We asked our subjects to continue what they were doing, and let their hands lead the sequence.
